Thankfulness and Hope

None of this is really about us. We, the Kennedy family, are included in but a few chapters of God’s Great Story. We hope as you read the stories of our journey as disciples of Jesus, that you too are inspired to consider how God is writing your life into His Story.

December 2024

“The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us.  We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.”  John 1:14

There is something quite remarkable about this time of year. As we near the end of one year and approach the next, there is this incredible mix of thoughts and emotions. We look back and reflect, consider the past, and give thanks for all that has been. But we also look ahead with hope and anticipation for the new year that is to come.

Looking back on the year 2024, our family has so much to be grateful for. A dream 15 years in the making, God opened the doors for us to move to France. It has been a year of transition, and while we have seen God provide in some incredible ways, we have also endured grief in saying many goodbyes and facing so much change. As a family, we have grown so close to one other, and as individuals, we have each grown deeper in our friendship with our Father in heaven. After the dismantling of our lives in Canada, we are now rebuilding life together in France. In all, 2024 has been a mix of blessings and challenges, joys and trials, memories and stories, all declaring the faithfulness of God.

Now, as we approach the new year, we look ahead to 2025. Aswe settle into life in France, we have much to hope for and anticipate in the year to come. We hope to advance in our mastery of the French language. We hope to build community and relationships with our neighbours. We hope to grow in friendship with our church family. We hope to deepen our cultural understanding of the Savoyard people, and explore how to build discipleship ecosystems in this region of France. Impressed upon us through our experiences this past year, we are convinced that we must continue to learn to hear and know the voice of the Holy Spirit, and have the courage to follow His leading. Above all, we hope to see God glorified in our midst.

Gratitude and reflection, hope and anticipation

these mark this season between one year and the next.

What are your reflections on 2024?

Your hopes for 2025?

Amidst this season of change came Christmas. As we celebrate the life of Jesus and what He accomplished in coming to earth, our gratitude and hope has a name: Emmanuel, God with us.  Jesus our Saviour, having lived a humble and ordinary life on earth, is the one we serve and follow, the one we look to as we face the future, and the one we thank as we reflect on the past. He is the source of all our thankfulness and He is our hope for all to come.

The unique story behind our new home…

Central to life lived on mission is HOME.  So much more than where we keep our stuff or where we eat and sleep, home is where meaningful life happens.  It is where we invite people in, where we eat together and grow together.    Home is where neighbours become friends and where we take care of those around us.  Home is where creating community begins.

Shortly after arriving in Aix-les-Bains, we felt the desire to find our home.  While our apartment was a blessing, it was both tiny and expensive, so we knew it would be temporary.  In search of a place to settle, we began to explore different neighbourhoods in and around the city.

One Sunday afternoon in May we visited the community of Lafin.  As we wandered the streets, something about this neighbourhood was different than the rest.  The homes were old and full of character, many built right up against another.  Unlike most other communities that had tall fences with large gates, here the homes and yards were visible from the street.  We noticed small gatherings of people in backyards talking together, waving hello at others passing by.  Despite being in the city, it had the warm and welcoming feeling of a small village.  And as Noëlle would later put it, it felt like “us” somehow.

Stopping at the tiny, unassuming square in the centre of Lafin, we sat on a park bench, praying and soaking in our surroundings.  Is this it, God?  Is this the neighbourhood where we would settle and make home?  As we sat in Place Lafin, in the heart of the community, we all had this growing feeling that this was where we needed to be.  In fact I (Becky) had this feeling that we needed to ask God to provide a house for us right there, near Place Lafin.

As we left the square, Joel noticed a guy walking in our direction wearing a t-shirt with a Canadian flag, so he said hello.  The man introduced himself as Pierre, and we chatted with him for a few minutes, briefly sharing how we arrived in Aix-les-Bains, how much we liked this particular neighbourhood, and that we had been searching for a place to live.  As if divinely inspired, Pierre turned and pointed to a house just behind him and asked “why don’t you buy this house?”, which he believed was for sale.  Before we could grasp what was happening, he called the owner who greeted us and welcomed us inside for a tour of the house.  It seemed to be just what we needed, was under budget, and was just across from Place Lafin.  All four of us found ourselves imagining living there.

Stunned by our experience, we returned to our apartment and talked as a family about what just happened.  Should we pray about it?  Ask God to make it clear?  Very appropriately, Noëlle’s response was “What do we need to pray about?  It seems like God just made it really obvious!

Seven months later, on December 20, we moved into our new community. into our HOME

  • For the people of France
  • For our new neighbours in Lafin
  • For our family as we settle into our new home.
