Fête des Voisins, Season 2
Last year we shared with you that at the end of May every year in France there is a day on the calendar marked “Fête des Voisins”, literally translated “The Celebration of Neighbours”.
Birthed out of a desire to combat isolation and loneliness in France, this 25 year old tradition is something our family believes is an amazing opportunity to bring people together. Last year we had a small fête in our private courtyard with our immediate circle of neighbours, followed by a larger gathering in the yard of another neighbour where more than 40 people came together.

This year, as Joel and I were praying about ideas for the fête, that very afternoon a neighbour came by. She had been discussing with a few others who were keen to form a planning committee for the fête this year. Excited to build upon the momentum from last year, everyone wanted this year’s fête to be community-wide.
Although the official date on the calendar is Friday, May 29, because Mother’s day in France also falls on the same weekend, it was decided to plan the event for Friday, June 5th. So, much like last year, we will again celebrate two “Fête des Voisins”. This Friday, our immediate circle of neighbours will meet in our private courtyard together, and next weekend we will all gather for the big event.
And when I say big, I mean big!
The community wide party will be held just around the corner from our house in the centre of our neighbourhood, in Place Lafin. The local police have given us the go ahead, and we have received the blessing of the mayor’s office, along with chairs and tables that will be delivered by the city free of charge.
We have advertised the event throughout the community, and more than 100 flyers have been distributed to homes. Now all that is left are the final details, decorations, and much, much prayer.
